OUR ECOSYSTEM
smart tags that activate digital experiences
a web app that lets people claim, connect, and unlock access
a SaaS platform for brands to turn physical things into data-rich, gamified, digital touchpoints
We work across fashion, music, and events, empowering culture-led brands to create drops, perks, and portals that move beyond content and into participation.
This isn’t about fixing the internet.
It’s about replacing it with something real.
the role
We’re looking for a part-time Legal Counsel to support DEPARTMNT as we scale – across commercial, corporate, IP, and tech/legal matters.
You’ll work closely with the founders and external advisors to guide contracts, protect the company’s IP, and ensure we stay compliant as we grow internationally.
This is a flexible advisory role, ideal for someone with startup or creative industry experience who wants to support something new and culturally meaningful.
What You’ll Do
- Draft, review, and negotiate commercial contracts (partners, clients, freelancers)
- Support investor docs, shareholder agreements, and equity structuring
- Guide IP protection for software, content, and branded assets
- Advise on privacy/data compliance (UK, EU, international markets)
- Help set up risk frameworks and contract templates for repeat use
- Work with the team to answer legal queries quickly and pragmatically
- Liaise with external counsel as needed but act as a strategic internal filter
What You’ll Bring
- 5+ years legal experience, ideally with a background in commercial, tech, or startup law
- Strong contract drafting and negotiation skills
- Knowledge of GDPR, IP law, and equity/shareholder frameworks
- Experience advising startups, creative companies, or product-led businesses
- Ability to work independently and provide fast, practical guidance
- Bonus: interest in culture, emerging tech, or digital innovation
- Licensed to practice law in the UK or relevant jurisdiction
What We Offer
- Flexible, part-time advisory role
- Paid retainer or hourly arrangement depending on preference
- Involvement in a fast-moving company at the intersection of culture and tech
- A chance to shape legal foundations with long-term impact
- Potential board/advisory seat or equity stake for ongoing contribution
